Profile

Chelene Hanes is a physical scientist with the fire and climate change group at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre (GLFC). She conducts studies in fire danger and fire behavior using spatial analysis tools including remote sensing and geographic information systems.  Her research focuses on improvements to the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System, as part of the Next-Generation development of that System by fire researchers across the Canadian Forest Service.  Ms. Hanes’s work includes research to improve fuel moisture estimation, for fire danger prediction, by integrating new spatial weather inputs and satellite remote sensing data.  She is also working on developing new fuel consumption models and techniques to estimate surface fuels and fuel loads for improved fire behaviour modelling.
