Abstract

This manual sets out procedures for conducting a forest inventory survey in which tree volumes are obtained directly from large-scale aerial photographs. The designs presented are adapted to surveys in which complete photo coverage is obtained along thin strips or forest as the aircraft transverses the survey area. All aspects of the sampling process are discussed: selection of locations of strips; selection of plot locations along strips; measurement of tree parameters on photos; derivation of plot volumes; and calculation of stand volumes and stadard errors. Various practical aspects are also discussed. A list is given of the equipment required, but its operation is not described.
