This year, two feature articles are available, complementing the printed report:

* [Squeezing more value from trees](/pages/182?lang=en_CA) – reports on the extensive efforts underway at every level of the forest sector value chain to expand and optimize the market value of Canada’s wood fibre resource. The well-integrated, innovation-driven transformation strategy guiding this revival is focused on two key objectives: developing higher-end products and services, and improving production efficiencies.

* [Working to sustain Canada’s forests into the future](/pages/207?lang=en_CA) – presents an overview of different initiatives that are underway to ensure that Canadian forests are environmentally sustainable in the long term, and that they continue to provide the many benefits that Canadians currently enjoy. This is especially important given the changes that have already begun to affect Canada’s forests. The article also describes how the natural attributes of those forests are contributing to their long-term capacity to adapt.

After all, forests cover nearly half of the Canadian landscape and are a dominant feature of our economy, culture, traditions and history. Increasing public interest in forest practices, global demand for wood, interest in non-timber benefits, forest certification, market pressures, biodiversity conservation and climate change are all impacting on the long-term management and use of our forests. This year's report looks at some of these challenges and issues and how they will likely change the forest landscape in the future.

L’État des forêts au Canada 2001-2002 : Reflets d’une décennie. 2002.
