He began working at Great Lakes Forestry Centre as a postdoctoral researcher. He later transitioned to Insect Production and Quarantine Laboratories in 2012 as a technician. In 2023, he became a permanent technologist with insect production.

Zhen Li holds a master’s degree in science (1997) in microbiology from Huazhong Agricultural University and bachelor’s degree in computer science (2014) from Algoma University, as well as a doctorate (2001) in biochemistry and molecular biology from Sun Yat-sen University.
