Fungus name:
Daldinia loculata (Lév.) Sacc.
Host name: Betula papyrifera Marshall
Year of collection (y-m-d):
2016-07-24
Map coordinates:
62.5200°N, 109.1700°W
Collector:
Sterenberg, V.
Determiner:
Callan, B.
Collection location: East Arm, Great Slave Lake, N.W.T.
Remarks:
Near Hoarfrost River homestead owned by the Olesen family. Sample growing on fire-killed Betula papyrifera from 2014 wildfire burn. Species flushed in June 2016. Threw spores roughly 7days following sample collection. Birch trees in area were heavily populated with fungus, growing on both fire-killed and fire-damaged trees. Collector was unaware that presence of insect species proximal to fungus was of interest to researchers. Site revisited, but no insects observed during short time spent there.

Collection location: Motase Peak (near Shelagyote Peak), B.C.
Remarks:
on ground near Abies lasiocarpa (Hooker) Nuttall; field collection 85; cap smooth and glossy; stem short; Ammirati says "Your field collection 85! As Kare indicated this is an interesting species, perhaps without a name, although there are still a number of unresolved arctic/alpine Telamonia. It does not key out to any species for certain. The habit and coloration of the basidiomata, the black exsiccatae, and the moderately large, slightly verrucose basidiospores are an interesting combination of features. This is one where more material and sequence data would be helpful."

Collection location: Motase Peak (near Shelagyote Peak), B.C.
Remarks:
on ground near Abies lasiocarpa (Hooker) Nuttall; field collection 78; clustered; Ammirati says "Cortinarius, section Laeti – Your field collection 73 Kare listed under C. auchmerus Moser, this is a synonym of C. laetus Moser. C. detonsus (Fr.:Fr.) Fr., your field collection 78, is a similar to laetus morphologically, however, it has basidiospores 9-10 x 5-6.5, ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, slightly verrucose to nearly smooth, while the basidiospores of C. laetus are 10-12.5 (-14) x 5.2-6.8 µm, somewhat more verrucose and amygdalioform. Your field collections 73 and 78 both have relatively large spores, here it would be a good idea to sequence additional material and compare these two taxa."

Collection location: Motase Peak (near Shelagyote Peak), B.C.
Remarks:
on ground with Salix stolonifera Coville; field collection 60; cap shiny purple brown; stem upper part purple; odour raw potato; Ammirati says "This is a fairly frequent species of arctic and alpine habitats with Salix. Your field collection 60 fits in general with the morphological features of C. subtorvus, however, your material lacks the characteristic heavy white veil and the basidiospsores are longer than normal for this taxon. More material from the field would be helpful here, especially since this is a widespread species in arctic/alpine habitats."

Your field collections 56, 61 with Salix stolonifera fit this species morphological and microscopically. This taxon can have a strong earthy odor, which you described as potato-like in field collection 17. Morphologically your collections are similar except for 30 which has a silky fibrillose pileus surface and a rather different aspect, together with somewhat smaller, more subgloboid basidiospores. In general, collection 17, 33, 34, 37, while morphologically similar to C. hinnuleus var. minatulis, have somewhat larger spores than this taxon. In Europe this is an alpine and arctic taxon with Salix. "
