Abstract

The National Forestry Database Program was founded in 1990 by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers to establish a comprehensive national forestry database, develop a public information program, and provide forestry information to the federal, provincial, and territorial policy processes. It records the level of forestry activity in any given period, as well as changes in the forest and forest management activities. The Canadian Forest Service developed and maintains the National Forestry Database. Provincial and territorial governments provide data for provincial (territorial) and private lands, and the CFS compiles information for federal lands from data provided by the responsible federal departments.

The database currently comprises 9 data sets: forest inventory, allowable annual cut, forest fires, forest insects and diseases, forest products, silviculture, forest management expenditures, revenues, and pest control product use. The online document presents detailed 1990 to 1996 data as well as key historical information gathered previously by other surveys.
