The early history of forest site classification in Alberta is briefly reviewed. The major site classification effort, the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification, and its progress over the past fifteen years is discussed. Available forest ecosystem and soil survey information was combined with other available information to produce a field guide with interpretations for forest management for one area in west-central Alberta. Similar field guides are in preparation. The obstacles to implementing a site classification are discussed, as are opportunities for using new information systems technologies.
