Abstract

Release of white spruce from aspen competition improved spruce diameter at breast height (dbh), height and volume growth in the 35-year period following aspen removal. Overall, release improved spruce periodic growth by 41% in diameter, 38% in height and 82% in volume over the control for sample trees ranging from 5 to 65 years of age.

Responses varied with site and age classes. Improved periodic dbh and height growth occurred in trees released throughout three age classes on good sites and in trees released at 26 to 45 years of age on medium sites.
