Abstract
The rooting ability of cuttings of 30 plus-trees aged 19 years from 6 Norway spruce provenances was examined in order to assess this propagation technique with a view to setting up clonal seed orchards. Nineteen weeks after the start of the test, the clones as a group showed a mean rooting percentage of 57 percent and slightly over 2.3 roots per cutting. Differences significant at the 1 percent level were found between both clones and tree origins. If the acceptability limit were set at 50 percent, nearly two-thirds of the selected trees would be suitable for making up the orchard. All provenances would be represented, thus ensuring the genetic diversity of the seed produced.
