Development of the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana was studied in the laboratory while the insect was subjected to different diets diets comprising foliage of its main hosts. The results indicate that the phenology of host shoot development has little influence on the development of the insect. However, the host given to the insect has a marked influence on its development; white spruce foliage was found to be more favorable to larval development than balsam fir foliage. Finally, a certain influence of the site of origin was noted in the rate of budworm development.
