Antagonism between S. lignicola and two root rot fungi, Polyporus tomentosus and Armillaria mellea, was investigated. Tests were made in vitro, on agar media and on white spruce root blocks. On agar media, growth of P. tomentosus and A. mellea ceased upon contrat with S. lignicola and the faster growth rate of the latter resulted in the eventual enclosure of the other two fungi. In wood blocks, the mycelium of A. mellea was rapidly destroyed by S. lignicola whereas growth of P. tomentosus was arrested, and the mycelium of this fungus was eventually slowly destroyed.
