Abstract

This investigation will determine seed production and dispersal characteristics of black spruce in anticipation of a future need for such knowledge in undertaking large scale broadcast seeding. No single report on this species seeding characteristics in Quebec was found. This study is justified by the lack of natural and adequate regeneration in black spruce boreal forests where the extensive areas of logged and burned-over forest present a great problem of reforestation. In the northern coniferous forest, single fires have covered un to 400 square miles, and the combined effect of logging and fire removes just about all sources of seed.
