Abstract
Genetic variation, conservation and utilization are discussed in relation to the Canadian spruces and it is suggested that the conservation and utilization of genetic resources represent simply another facet of integrated resource management. An inventory of these genetic resources can be made and the basis of breeding programs established, by the implementation of range-wide provenance trials following the recommendations of IUFRO, and the FAO Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources. The conservation of gene resources in situ, and in arboreta is also discussed. Methods of utilizing genetic resources during the long waiting period between the initiation of a program of selection and breeding, and the attainment of its objectives are outlined.
