Abstract

About 75% of the wood of 1.2 m long sugar maple logs was invaded by fungi when they were left undisturbed during 4 years on the forest soil. Decay fungi were isolated throughout all the logs and decay was measurable in the heartwood up to 35 cm from their ends. Removal of a strip of bark from the part of the log opposite the ground and addition of liquid cultures of Polyporus versicolor or P. tulipiferae did not accelerate deterioration. Armillaria mellea invaded progressively with time and preferentially in damp wood, whereas Hymenochaete tabacina was isolated most frequently after 2 years and mainly near logs ends.
