Pest management activities in forestry, such as monitoring, risk assessment and control, can be costly. To optimize the deployment and use of human and material resources, plans must consider the poikilothermic nature of the organisms involved, and the capricious nature of weather. Planning becomes more daunting in regions of complex topography and physiography. BioSIM is a software package that helps in the application of phenology and other seasonal forecasting simulation models of temperature-dependent processes to areas of ecological research and pest management. BioSIM performs essentially two tasks: it produces geographically specific temperature forecasts and it predicts seasonal events from these forecasts using temperature-driven simulation models. Both tasks involve (1) managing weather databases, (2) running simulation models and (3) producing reports. The seasonal simulation models handled by BioSIM require daily minimum and maximum or hourly air temperatures as input. BioSIM was designed to provide the best possible time series of weather data for a given location, based on the most appropriate sources of weather data. BioSIM facilitates the systematic variation of model parameters, such as elevation, to quantify their influence on model outputs. It also enables the production of landscape-wide projections of model outputs on the basis of digital terrain models.
