The relationships between radial growth of balsam fir and spruce budworm outbreaks were studied over the past 50 to 60 years in two sites (Manouane Lake and Mitis Lake), province of Quebec, Canada. The normal radial growth was determined by LOWESS smoother and the effects of site and period on the duration of growth reduction and amplitude of this reduction were evaluated by analysis of variance. The growth reduction during the first outbreak links very well with defoliation classes contrary to the second outbreak. Mean duration of growth reduction and maximal growth reduction are different between the two sites.
