Abstract

Mountain pine beetles continued to devastate pine stands in the Columbia, White and Kettle River valleys and increased dramatically in the Flathead Valley; other species of bark beetles remained at low levels. Larch casebearer moderately damaged larch stands and further expanded its range. Populations of larch sawfly, larch looper, larch budmoth and 2-year-cycle spruce budworm expanded to outbreak levels. Red band disease of pine was prevalent and Armillaria root rot, globose gall rust and white pine blister rust continued to cause tree mortality and increment loss.
