Biotechnology contributes greatly to forest pathology in Canada. It is used to help in the development of disease-resistant tree varieties through tissue culture and genomic transformation techniques. It can help elucidate the mechanisms of tree disease resistance by providing a variety of molecular methodologies. Biotechnology helps decipher the population genetics of pathogens. It also allows for the development of novel methods of disease control through the manipulation of microorganisms. In future, we speculate that the need for biotechnology in forest pathology will increase because disease-related problems may become more important if high yield forestry is applied.
