Abstract

A new genus and species of myrmecophilous staphylinid, Paragoniusa myrmicae (Staphylinidae, Aleocharinae, Athetini), is described and illustrated. Paragoniusa is similar to the myrmecophilous aleocharine genus Goniusa Casey distributed in the Nearctic Region, but can be distinguished from it by several distinctive features mentioned in the diagnosis. Paragoniusa myrmicae was collected from nests to Myrmica brevispinosa Wheeler. In several character states, Paragoniusa is also similar to Lomechusa Gravenhorst (Aleocharinae, Lomechusini), another myrmecophilous aleocharine genus associated with Myrmica in the Palearctic Region, to which it appears to be externally convergent due to similarity of their habitat.
