Abstract
Damage mapping of defoliation and tree mortality caused by the spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) has been carried out by a federal department in different parts of Canada over almost three-quarters of a century. The resulting cartograhic information has become distinctly more reliable and complete, especially since 1947. Beginning in 1980, a Working Group studied and compared the procedures used by the Canadian Forestry Service in different regions of Canada, under Studies A4 and A5 of the Spruce Budworm Implementation Plan. Various problems associated with damage mapping have been identified and 16 recommendations are offered for their solution. A rationale, based on demonstrated values, is provided for the continuation and support of damage-mapping in all regions of Canada. Also, new research and experience are called for. Some recommendations are designed to encourage and facilitate inter-regional coordination at the national level; others aim to improve national damage maps through greater compatibility of the respective regional components in terms of interpretation, accuracy and completeness.
