In 2006, a total of 360 lodgepole pine (Pl) trees were destructively sampled from 45 sites that had been killed by the mountain pine beetle (MPB) over the last several years. These trees were sampled from the Sub Boreal Spruce (SBS) Biogeoclimatic zone in Quesnel, Vanderhoof, and Burns Lake areas in north central British Columbia. The trees were distributed evenly across the geographic areas as well as across a sample matrix that included three classes of time since death, three classes of diameter at breast height, and three classes of soil moisture regime.
The sample trees were felled and bucked into 2.5 m lengths with stem analysis discs taken for detailed measurements of moisture content, checking characteristics, and blue stain content. Detailed measurements were taken on the trees prior to falling and on the site and stand conditions where the trees were sampled. Dendrochronology techniques were used to estimate the year of death of the MPB killed trees, in addition to the subjective assessment of years since death estimated in the field.
This report describes the procedures to the collect the data and the associated database submitted to the Canadian Forest Service. The sample trees are summarized in the report, but this project did not include any analysis or interpretation of the data.
