Potebniamyces balsamicola Smerlis is shown to be the chief fungus associated with dieback and canker disease of alpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) in British Columbia. Symptoms are described and effects discussed. Girdling cankers were also found in grand fir (Abies grandis (Dougl.) Lindl.) growing in the interior wet belt and in amabilis fir (Abies amabilis (Dougl.) Forb.) growing in the north.
