Unstratified and stratified seeds of western hemlock (Tsugaheterophylla) germinated fastest under 4-h photoperiods and slowest under 24-h photoperiods at 20 °C. No differences were found between total darkness and an 8-h photoperiod. Stratification tended to reduce the degree of response to photoperiod. Several indices of germination rate and capacity were compared.
