Abstract

Study of the effect of Bacillus thuringiensis var. sotto Ishiwata toxin on the perme ability of the gut wall of Bombyx mori (Linnaeus) larvae by means of radioactive tracers has shown that transfer of UC14-glucose into the hemocoel is inhibited by the toxin, while transfer of sodium-C14-carbonate is accelerated. The results are interpreted as support for the proposal that the general paralysis observed in this insect is due to changes in the hemolymph pH induced by altered gut wall permeability.
