The hardwood forest in southern Quebec was damaged to different degrees by the ice storm in January 1998. In hardwood stands managed for lumber production, data on the extent of the damage caused by the ice storm are practically nonexistant. In this context, a study was conducted in a sugar maple - yellow birch high forest stand to estimate the degree of damage according to species, and to evaluate the effect of this damage on the radial growth of trees. The results obtained by using contingency tables indicate that only yellow birch suffered significant damage, while the other species (sugar maple, white ash and beech) sustained no damage or light damage only. Radial growth of trees shows that the stand is in a period of decline and the impact of the ice storm on this trend thus seems statistically non-significant.
