Abstract
Spruce budworm (SBW) outbreaks occur at regular intervals, causing significant damage to fir and spruce trees in Canada. Canadian Forest Service (CFS) researchers have been studying this insect pest for more than 50 years. This brochure provides a synthesis of current knowledge on the spruce budworm itself, on cyclic outbreaks of the insect and on control measures, as well as on the innovative approaches it has inspired. The focus is on research carried out at the Laurentian Forestry Centre, which is made possible through partnering and collaboration with researchers working for other CFS centres, provincial governments and universities.
