Abstract

The nomenclatural history of Stephanodes Enock is summarized. The genus is defined and compared to its probable sister genus, Agalmopolynema Ogloblin, and to Polynema Haliday, the common genus with which Stephanodes has been most often confused. Masonana Yoshimoto is treated as a new synonym of Stephanodes, and Stephanodes polynemoides (Yoshimoto) is treated as a new combination. One new species from North America, S. septentrionalis Huber, is described. Stephanodes psecas Girault is treated as a junior synonym of S. similis Forster, and S. orientalis Taguchi and S. imbricatus (Narayanan and Subba Rao) are treated as junior synonyms of S. reduvioli (Perkins). Lectotypes are designated for S. elegans Enock and S. reduvioli, and the problem of a previous lectotype designation for S. similis is discussed. The described species except for S. chestertoni (Debauche), whose type material is missing, are keyed.
