This two page note gives an overview of the research into population trends of bird populations that respond to spruce budworm outbreaks in Canada. With the expected warming of the climate it will be necessary to understand how these changes will affect bird populations and the spruce budworm. This research will also affect how future forests are managed in light of the findings on the changing dynamics of bird populations and these forest insect pests. In order for the CFS to promote the sustainability of Canada’s forests it will be important to monitor and understand the effects that integrated forest pest management may have on the interrelationships between these birds and forest insect pests.
