Plain Language Summary
This paper provides a reclassification of the 400 species described in the genus Gonatocerus, all parasitoids in the eggs of sap sucking insects – the treehoppers, leafhoppers and plant hoppers, many of which are considered pests and some of which are implicated in plant disease transmission. The genus is broken up into 14 genera, seven of them new to science. All the genera and the 16 new species in the new genera are described and illustrated with 340 photographs and scanning electron micrographs. An identification key is presented. The distribution and biology of each genus is summarized. This paper will allow taxonomists and biological control workers to identify the genera correctly and determine the correct generic placement for any of the species.
