Abstract

Forest pests include both insects and diseases, which cause forest damage defined as the negative effects of the pest on the quantity and quality of the resources that are expected from a unit of land. Forest pest damage is governed by one or more changes in tree life history traits covering growth, reproduction, and survival, which occur over many decades; hence, computer modelling of these effects is necessary to understand how to manage them in time. This book chapter is focused on forest pest modelling covering insects and diseases within an ecological and financial forest management perspective. This chapter reviews i.) the requirements that need to be considered when developing models that simulate tree and pest interactions, ii.) pest damage to timber resources, iii.) and describes several simulation tools that show how pests affect forest management decisions by practical example.
