The objective of this cross-cutting multi-year project was to design and implement a biomass information portal. A large component of this portal is an interactive web based decision support tool based on Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies. This GIS tool is publicly accessible and allows users to make well-informed decisions based on information that presents a nationally comprehensive and consistent picture of biomass quantity and opportunity. The resources provided to the decision maker will incorporate information crucial to the industrial exploitation of the herbaceous and woody biomass resource. Examples of information include: quantity and extent of herbaceous and woody biomass supplies as well as energy, water, manufacturing facilities and mills, and transportation infrastructure available for exploitation of the biomass resource. Models will be used to move beyond reporting on the state of the resource and provide the user with a predictive capacity for woody and herbaceous biomass availability.
