First, a brief overview of forest genetics and tree breeding activities realized in Canada and in Quebec in the past is presented. This is followed by a statement of the main accomplishments in that field and examples of genetic gains obtained by the selection of the best sources and individuals for an economically important variety of species used in the reforestation program in Quebec. Finally, a description of the medium-term outlook for the strategies supporting the reforestation program and the research activities in forest genetics and tree improvement that should be either pursued or initiated concludes this paper.
