Abstract
Several methods are described in the literature concerning the determination of uric acid and allantoin. But, the determination of these two compounds, when present in a sample, present difficulties because of the parallel in their chemical and physical-chemical behavior.
Eight selected methods were studied concerning the sensitivity and interference in the methods. The selective combination of three of the eight methods permitted the qualitative and quantitative determination of uric acid and allantoin. A technique which can be used in measuring the nitrogenous compounds (uric acid and allantoin) in the frass of phytophagous insects is described. This paper is useful for anyone interested in the nitrogen catabolism of insects.
