Plain Language Summary

This paper describes the sPlot database, grouping together vegetation-plot records on presence and relative abundance within plant communities. Such data are widespread across research groups, environmental agencies and biodiversity centers and are generally used in regional research and nature conservation. However, vegetation-plot data are rarely accessible at continental or global extents to the broader scientific community. sPlot version 2.1 contains records from 1,121,244 vegetation plots, which in turn comprise 23,586,216 plant species occurrences and their relative cover or abundance. The database covers all continents and biomes. Plot sizes vary from less than 1 m2 to 25 ha. All plots are georeferenced, although with varying precision. Maps highlighting data availability and their location of origin as well as a phylogenetic tree that describes the species represented in the database are provided. Such large databases, built on the collaboration and effort of many researchers and practitioners, are an important tool to explore global patterns in taxonomy, phylogeny, and plant traits at the whole community level.
