Plain Language Summary
This publication is a case study from a Northern Alberta mulched black spruce prescribed fire in 2017. Researchers collected data on mulch fire using infrared cameras in order to assess the ability of the Fire Behaviour Prediction system to predict mulch fire behaviour. The reference model from the Fire Behaviour Prediction system being tested was the S-2 (white spruce / balsam slash) fuel model. The study found that mulch fire was considerably slower and less intense on average when compared to S-2. This study is a part of a number of fires that will define the mulch fuel type in subsequent iterations of the Fire Behaviour Prediction system.
