Abstract

This factsheet describes the work Cumulative Effects researcher Jason Leach, who develops models to better understand the impact of cumulative effects on forest water sources.

Plain Language Summary

Forests supply clean water and reduce flood and drought risk for those living downstream. Changes to the forest can alter the forest water cycle, so it is important to model and predict how changes in forest cover will affect downstream water resources. This project will develop a modelling tool to predict effects on forest cover and impacts on water resources. Developing a tool for predicting these effects consists of modelling development, model application and knowledge transfer. Model development will add data into a system called “Raven”. The model application phase will apply the model to six test watersheds across Canada. Once the data is tested and put into Raven, the new model will be available to end users. Models such as Raven help predict potential impacts of resource development and effects on water resources. This project will help inform various strategies and allow end-users to predict both short and long-term effects on water resources.
