Plain Language Summary
Canada’s forests are a significant source of freshwater and an important part of the global carbon cycle. Due to the global importance of Canada’s forests for carbon storage and freshwater, current science on reclamation and forest management practices tends to focus on the restoration and maintenance of these key ecosystem functions and services, which can be an important consideration in land management. This project provides the science to support both the responsible management of forest harvest operations and afforestation/reclamation projects. It will also develop new ecosystem indicators of carbon in freshwater ecosystems. This project provides science that will help maximize carbon capture and develop indicators designed to protect and restore water resources. The overall objective is to reduce global carbon emissions and enable our forests to continue providing benefits for Canadians.
