Plain Language Summary
Cellar spiders are relatively common in Canada, particularly associated to human dwellings. There are two introduced species formally reported to occur in the country. This study includes the first formal record of an additional introduced species (Pholcus opilionoides) in Canada, from various specimens collected in Alberta. Although the species has been observed in the country, particularly from online resources (such as iNaturalist), it is not currently listed in the Canadian spider checklist, as there are no formal and verified reports of the presence of the species. We provide a brief discussion about the features that characterize this species, with respect to the other two introduced species, include high quality illustrations of both male and female, and describe some notes on the species biology. This manuscript contributes to advancing the spider knowledge of Canada.
