MIFUCAM (Méthode d'inventaire forestier utilisant le capteur aéroporté MEIS) is a trial of high resolution Multispectral Electro-optical Imaging Scanner (MEIS) imagery for forest inventory mapping in Quebec. MEIS II imagery at 60 cm resolution was acquired over two sites: a 10 km x 14 km test block near Maniwaki, Quebec, and a smaller site in the Lac St.-Jean region. The data will be radiometrically and geometrically corrected, enhanced, and then visually interpreted on a stereo CRT display system to produce a geographic information system (GIS) based 1:20 000 scale forest inventory map. The objectives of the project are to determine if this concept of forest inventory mapping is feasible, to identify the steps and improvements in systems and procedures needed for operational implementation, and to provide experience to the forestry and industrial remote sensing communities that will facilitate transition of the technology into operational use. The paper outlines the experiment and documents the data acquisition component of the study.
