Abstract
Forest inventory compilation procedures and the application of inventory estimates arising from the compilations have not been described in the literature. To fill this gap a survey of provincial and territorial compilation procedures was undertaken, and a common forest inventory process, or model, emerged. This report describes components of the model and lists characteristics of provincial inventory procedures as they relate to the model. Weaknesses associated with the inventory process relate more to the understanding and application of the model than to the individual components. The main problems are associated with the sequencing of components, photo interpretation, the establishment of sample units, and the application of single tree equations. Although the individual components of the model are likely to change in the future the basic compilation process is expected to remain valid. An example of a forest inventory procedure is contained in an appendix.
