Abstract
Argentina and Brazil possess a wealth of resources in the plantation forest that dominate the Chilean forestry sector in size but not yet quality. The sawmilling industry is divided into two sectors; one that services the domestic market and the other that is made up of a few larger firms that service the international market. The latter sector is underdeveloped and opportunities exist for technical and marketing expertise. Recently restrictions on the importation of foreign equipment have been relaxed providing opportunities for suppliers of harvesting equipment. Successful entry into Argentine and Brazilian markets will depend upon an integrated approach that provides background knowledge of the local industry, technical expertise and the ability to effectively market the end-product.
