Four aspects are developed in assessing the opportunities for BC moulding producers in the US market: 1) competitor analysis, 2) US market assessment, 3) structure and potential of the BC industry, and then 4) combining the above three points of the triangle to evaluate opportunities for BC moulding producers. The authors determine that opportunities exist in US markets, but demand is subject to greatly increased competition from fast growth pine plantations, domestic MDF production, high-quality exports and radiata pine MDF products. Success for BC producers will be challenging and will require diversification of species, adding MDF as a raw material for moulding manufacture, exploring the use of imported pine moulding blanks and developing relationships with end-users and delivering a better package (price, quality, service) than competitors.
