Abstract

A World Wide Web (WWW)-based system for diagnosis of forest tree diseases in British Columbia, Canada, is described. Features of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Common Gateway Interface (CGI) that affected the design and implementation of the system are discussed. A new list processing approach to diagnosis was used to accommodate these features of the CGI. The system features facilitates dynamic creation of new web pages in response to user input, to present the results of a diagnosis in a fashion that permits the determination of the reasons why a particular disease hypothesis is confirmed or denied. Diagnosis in a multi-lingual setting is also described.
