Plant-tissue and cell-culture techniques have improved greatly over the last few decades. For many herbaceous species, industrial application has become possible, primarily as a means to achieve large-scale clonal propagation. In spite of intense research efforts, the conifers were late in that respect. However, with recent advances in methodology, particularly in somatic embryogenesis, the current outlook is promising and industrial application has started.
