Biomass production and fire regimes

Background

Mean biomass production in the absence of disturbance as a function of forest age can be estimated from available forest yield equations; however, the estimate needs to be improved by incorporating the influence of climate and weather conditions.

Biomass production is influenced by stand-replacement disturbances such as fire. A better understanding of fire regimes under natural and management scenarios is required for predicting biomass production.

Different types of fires could have diverse effects on biomass production; therefore, fire effects need to be considered.

Region-dependent climate change scenarios would influence the biomass production of major Canadian forest types differently; thus, diverse patterns of biomass production could appear across the country.
